As a St. John’s, Newfoundland photographer, there is something really special about being part of the moment a young person starts to see themselves a little differently, especially during sessions like this one in Clarenville.
Hillary’s mom first reached out to me because Hillary was getting ready for an upcoming trip to Toronto and wanted to start building a modelling portfolio. She was excited about it, but also a little nervous, which is honestly exactly how it should feel when you are trying something new.
And if you are a parent reading this, you probably know that mix well. The excitement, the hesitation, and the quiet hope that this could be something really good for them.
We planned her session at the Beaumont in Clarenville, and it ended up being the perfect spot. Bright, simple, and relaxed. Nothing overwhelming, just a really comfortable space where she could ease into the experience.
At the beginning, Hillary was a little shy in front of the camera. That is something I see all the time with teens, especially when it is their first session like this. There is always that moment of wondering what to do with your hands, where to look, and if you are doing it right.
So we didn’t rush it.
We kept things easy. We talked, we laughed, and we moved around a bit. No pressure, no expectations, just giving her the space to get comfortable.
And then, like it always does, something shifted.
The nerves settled, her confidence started to show up, and you could see her personality come through in such a natural way. Not forced, not posed in a way that didn’t feel like her. Just Hillary, feeling a little more sure of herself with each shot.
That is always the goal.
By the end of the session, she was completely in it. The images we created are such a strong start to her modelling portfolio, and I am so excited for her heading into Toronto and everything that comes with that.

And for the parents reading this, this is the part I always want you to know.
It is not about creating a perfect model. It is about giving your child a space where they can feel comfortable, supported, and seen. Where they can try something new without pressure, and maybe walk away standing a little taller than they did when they walked in.
Confidence does not show up all at once. It builds in moments like this.
If your teen has been talking about modelling, or even just wants to feel more confident in front of the camera, this is such a great place to start.
While I am based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, I also travel for sessions, including Clarenville and surrounding areas. If you are looking for modelling portfolio photography in St. John’s or beyond, I would love to help create something that feels natural, comfortable, and true to who they are.
